We Will Survive
Rooted & Thriving Despite Suppression
If you’ve followed my writing, you know that my values are rooted in integrity, equity, justice, knowledge, and truth. So, it should come as no surprise to anyone who has taken one of my classes in person at 540WMain (or the local library), joined me online, participated in the Unpacking Book Club, or read even one of the books from my annual Must-Read list, that the times we’re living in today—where books are being banned, DEI programs dismantled, and undocumented citizens deported—are not new. For those of us with multiple intersecting identities—whether defined by race, gender, ethnicity, age, size, or disability—this moment in history is not shocking. It’s a recurring cycle, deeply rooted in the violent and often buried truths of America’s past.
Let me be clear: none of us should be surprised.
We are witnessing, yet again, a chapter straight from the white supremacy playbook—a relentless attempt to target, silence, and erase the bodies, voices, and stories of the most marginalized through lies, propaganda, and disinformation. But history offers us a truth far more powerful:
We do not disappear. We grow.
When they try to bury us, we dig our roots deeper.
When they try to divide us, we strengthen our communities.
When they try to silence us, we speak louder—through art, activism, and education.
Some of us go underground. Some of us rest. Some of us plot. Most of us plan. But through it all, we persist.
We turn to the wisdom of our ancestors, activists, artists, and curators who came before us. We read. We write. We strategize. We mobilize. Our languages survive. Our dialects survive. Our communities thrive—even when forced to rebuild from the ground up.
If you’re reading this, you are a survivor.
You already have the tools to subvert the current narrative.
You have the power to live boldly—unafraid, unashamed, and unwavering in your commitment to truth and justice.
Because light will always drive out darkness.
I will survive.
You will survive.
We will survive.
